Timothy Doran, 60, of Lyndhurst, lifelong resident of Rutherford passed away suddenly Monday, August 31st, 2020. He was born in Newark to parents, Peter and Joan (nee O’Grady) Doran. Tim had graduated from St. Mary’s Academy and St. Mary’s High School (class of 1978) in Rutherford. He was considered a sports star in H.S. He was the inductee in St. Mary’s Hall of Fame for remarkable distance running in the 1970’s. With his team the “Gaels”, a couple of his accomplishments were Bergen Cty. Championships Group 1 880 first place (2.01.5)and Bergen Cty. Championships Group 1 Mile first place (4:31.2) and many more. However, Tim’s lasting achievement is his school record was in the mile of 4:24.2, which still stands for 40 years. In his Senior Year, the Inductee received the Bob Blum Student Athlete Award.

Following his extraordinary athletic career at St Mary’s, Tim attended Widener College and Upsala College then served for four years as an assistant basketball coach at Upsala where the team was a National 111 Final Four participant. He went on to serve as an assistant basketball coach at Rutgers University in Newark, where the team made its first appearance in the N.J.A.C. Post Season tournament. Tim served as an assistant coach at St. Mary’s for two years and then head coach for another two years. He was also a longtime member of the Bergen County Umpire Association (BCUA) since 1990 and considered one of their "best".

Tim was a great coach and mentor to so many aspiring young athletes, he was regarded as a generous man with his time and decent man; a friend.

Tim is predeceased by his father, Peter (2004) and mother, Joan (2009). He will be sadly missed by his Uncle Paul O’Grady and his wife Ellen, many cousins and friends.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Liturgy will be offered on Friday at 9:30am in the Church of Saint Mary, 91 Home Avenue, Rutherford. Inurnment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to St. Mary High School Alumni in honor of Tim Doran. Donations will be offered to the Class of 78' Memorial Scholarship.

As a sophomore student-athlete transferring in to Rutgers Newark, the transfer process had some initial challenges. Coach Dorin helped tremendously with that transition. His guidance over the next 3 years were both important and memorable. The coaching staff of Coaches Hill, Dorin, and DeFerrari took a group of young men and guided us to great accomplishments as a team and as individuals. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with Coach a couple of years ago doing what he liked...watching the NCAA tournament at WEE WILLIES. My condolences are extended to coach's family and friends. He will be missed.-Shannon Sweeeny

Tim was one of the best coaches I ever coached with, one of the best umpires I ever worked with and one of the best people I ever had the pleasure of knowing. Tim, I hope you realize how many lives you touched and how sorely you'll be missed. I also hope you have found peace. My condolences to his family and friends.
